Leo August Pochhammer (1841- 24.3.1920)

Germain mathematician known for his contributions in the theory of special functions (e.g. he introduced the generalized hypergeometric function) and applied mathematics (theory of elasticity).

Educated in Berlin where he obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Berlin with the thesis  De superficiei undarum derivatione  writen under E.E.Kummer in 1863. In 1874 he became a lecturer at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität of Kiel and in 1877  the professor of mathematics. In 1893 he was the rektor of the University. He retired in 1919.
